Dear Doctor: I have a 1989 Cadillac with an air conditioning problem. The compressor does not come on, so to activate the compressor I have to disconnect the battery and reconnect it again. The air conditioner works nice and cold and then the compressor stops and there’s no more a/c. It doesn’t need Freon and there are no leaks. Can you give me any suggestions? Charles
Dear Charles: When you disconnect the battery you are resetting the electronics. For the a/c compressor to stop there is a sensor in the system shutting the power to the compressor. The sensors monitor the a/c line pressure. If it is either too high or too low, then it will shut the power to the a/c compressor clutch. A technician will need to hook up the gauges and monitor both the pressures. — Junior Damato, Motor Matters
